Getting into W6 and W14 kitchens
The mansion blocks on Hammersmith Road, Brook Green and around Barons Court still have their original small kitchens, and the oven there is a single built in under the worktop. Their lifts are tiny, with folding gates. The tank will not fit in one, so racks and shelves go down the stairs to the van, and anything that will not travel is stripped where it is.
The terraces in Brackenbury Village and the Ravenscourt streets are a different job. Nearly every house has a side-return extension at the back, which leaves a narrow galley with the cooker wedged between units and no floor beside it. Nothing gets laid out in the room; parts go out to the tank as they come off.
Thames Water supply here is hard chalk water, so grease on door glass and hob trivets sits on a layer of scale. We degrease first and descale second, because a soak on its own leaves a white haze.
In the borough's Zone D the parking controls run every day from 8.30am to 10pm, and the pay bays on Goldhawk Road and Askew Road stop at two hours at best. That is shorter than the job. If you can book a visitor session on your permit, the van stays in a resident bay for the whole visit.
